Personal Recovery from Substance Abuse and Addiction
There are many substance abuse treatment models, providers, and advertisements. In a time of need, it can be difficult to know where to turn. The truth is that there is no single approach that works for everyone - no "one size fits all." Yet, the recommendations people receive often relate to who assesses them and where they are assessed. Recommendations may lack research-support and may fail to seriously consider the person's desires. In fact, many times, people with substances abuse problems are thought to be "manipulating" or "in denial"; and their opinions, self-assessments, and preferences are often disregarded.
Dr. Welches will begin by listening to you with respect, and together you will explore your circumstances, options, and desires. Dr. Welches will provide you with information on types of treatments, recovery models, and what has worked for some others. However, these same things may or may not work for you. Each person is unique. It is important that the choice be yours — and that it is an informed choice.
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY WITH DR. WELCHES
Dr. Welches is available to provide individual substance use therapy for persons whose needs and preferences match with this approach. For some, individual therapy may be complemented by participating in peer-support meetings; such as 12-step fellowships, SMART Recovery, and/or Refuge Recovery. If you are interested, Dr. Welches will assist you in accessing peer supports. Additionally, some persons may desire and benefit from medications that reduce cravings to use drugs. In such cases, referrals to prescribing physicians will be made.
Integrated therapy of co-occurring problems. More than half of the people with substance use problems also experience some degree of mental and emotional distress. Research shows that these sets of issues are best addressed together, in an integrated manner. Dr. Welches offers integrated therapy for co-occurring problems to provide efficient and effective results.
ACCESS TO PROVIDERS OF OUTPATIENT GROUP TREATMENT OR RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS
For many people, individual therapy, sometimes accompanied by peer supports, is sufficient. However, for some individuals, there are times that they may need and want outpatient group treatment, residential treatment, or inpatient detoxification. If this is the case, Dr. Welches will provide information about providers of those services.
